Switchboard Upgrades

Unless your switchboard is fitted with safety switches (also known as Residual Current Devices or RCD’s) it should be upgraded. You can check for safety switches in your board by looking for the “Test” button on the breaker, however, we suggest calling us for an obligation free inspection to exactly determine the safety of your home.

Safety switches work by monitoring the current flowing out and then returning in a circuit and must trip within 300 milliseconds if an imbalance is detected. This stops the flow of electricity through someone’s body. Because a tiny amount of current can cause an electrocution, this quick trip time is critical.

In many older homes the circuit protection may only consist of rewireable fuses or circuit breakers, which are designed to protect the cable against overload, not specifically to protect the person.

LED Lighting Upgrades

The benefits of upgrading your Halogen downlights to LED are many. Here are a few:

  • LED’s are very energy efficient and are typically consume around 80% less than a halogen downlight.
  • LED’s have a rated lifespan of 40,000 hours compared to Halogens with a 1,000 – 2,000 hour estimated lifespan.
  • Halogens generate extreme heat and a clearance is required between the globe and combustible material such as insulation and timber. Leaving large holes around light fittings can severely compromise a home’s thermal performance.
  • In contrast, because LED’s operate at much lower temperatures they can covered and abutted with insulation.
  • LED’s are sealed units which reduce the transfer of conditioned air into the roof space.
  • Due the extreme heat generated by Halogens they pose a serious fire risk.

House Rewiring

If you suspect your home may need rewiring we can carry out an obligation free inspection and advise if any remedial work is required.

You may be concerned about the age of the wiring or be experiencing symptoms of a deteriorating or overloaded electrical system such as flickering lights, fuses blowing, circuit breakers tripping or tingles from metal appliances.

If your home was built before 1970 it may contain VIR cable (Vulcanised Indian Rubber) or TRS (Tough Rubber Sheathed) cable. These cables deteriorate over time and are a credible risk of fire or electrocution. A recent news story by 7 News highlights the risks of older cabling - See here
