The federal Government launched the Cheaper Home Battery Scheme on 1st July 2025, making it easier and more affordable for households to install home battery systems. It provides a point-of-sale discount of approximately 30% on eligible home battery systems. The scheme is not means tested meaning any residential, small business or community customers meeting the following eligibility criteria can benefit from the rebate.
must be 5–100 kWh nominal capacity; rebate applies up to 50 kWh of usable capacity.
must be paired with a new or existing rooftop PV system.
System must be installed by an SAA-accredited professional.
On-grid systems must be capable of Virtual Power Plant connectivity (though actual participation is optional)
It is important to note the federal rebate may only be claimed once for each property address. If a system at a premises has already received the federal discount, further upgrades or second batteries are not eligible for another claim.
The rebate is calculated using STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates), the same system used for solar panel rebates. You earn a certain number of STCs based on your battery’s usable capacity (in kWh). Each STC is worth approximately $40, depending on market rates, so a larger battery earns more STC’s and a bigger discount. The number of STCs you can claim drops each year until the program ends in 2030.
In 2025, a home battery is eligible for 9.3 STCs per kWh of usable storage.
For example, a battery with 24 kWh of usable capacity would generate 223.2 STCs.
At an average STC price of $40 per certificate, this translates to a rebate of $8,928:
24 kWh × 9.3 STCs/kWh × $40/STC = $8,928
This rebate represents roughly 30–35% of the typical installation cost for a reputable, medium-to-large-capacity home battery system.
However, it’s important to note that the number of STCs per kWh decreases annually due to the government’s deeming period. For the following year, the same 24 kWh battery would be eligible for fewer STCs, reducing the rebate to around $8,040—a drop of approximately $888.

The deeming period is the length of time (in years) over which the Australian Government estimates the amount of renewable energy a solar or battery system will generate or offset. This period determines how many Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) the system is eligible for at installation.
For batteries, the deeming period typically decreases each year, meaning systems installed later receive fewer STCs, gradually reducing the upfront rebate amount. This planned reduction encourages early adoption of clean energy technologies.
